I know zip about cameras.

Need a "Professional" style video camera for work.
Boss prefers Canon products but it could be any brand.
Budget: $2500
Resolution: up to 1080p
Zoom capability
Microphone capability
Good battery life.
Record to removable media.

Will be used for recording classes and recording emergency events, IE earthquakes, floods, etc.
Classroom is 40'X40'.
Events could be anywhere, any time of day or night.
