So I'm going to be renewing my 2 year AT&T contract and I am looking for a subsidized phone. This is what I am looking for:

I am stuck with AT&T
Wi-Fi capable
Cheap as possible (0-$100 after subsidy)
No data plan

So I'm running into the problem where all the subsidized phones with Wi-Fi require a data plan for the advertised price. I am not interested in paying for a data plan. Connectivity through Wi-Fi is enough since I am pretty much always near a wireless network. I just want the ability to IM and maybe occasionally look something up online when I am not home. Basically things that even my ancient pocket PC was able to do.

I suppose a way around the data plan requirement for the subsidized price is to buy a phone that does not require it, sell the phone, and then use the money to buy some other phone. Then I would be able to unlock and use phones that would otherwise not be compatible with AT&T. There is still the problem of a data plan being required no matter what with some smart phones, but I am sure there are ways around this that I would gladly exploit.

If it has wifi it's going to need a data plan. Just get a cheap phone for free and buy a phone for full price from an other source.

Nokia E63 is about $150 from Dell.

You got QWERTY keyboard, too.

Don't know why you are stuck with ATT(especially if you are renewing a new 2yr contract) but heres a pretty simple solution.
Get the best free phone from them with the renewing that doesn't require a data plan.
Look on craigslist for a 2G iphone. Look hard enough and you can find one for $100.
Take the sim card out of the free phone and plug into the 2g iphone and you're good to go.
