Advice on my upgrade plan

Ok, because of how well Rambus treated the memory guys I've ended up with some expensive RDRAM that I don't want to waste but I think I'm stuck. I've got the system in my sig and I'd like to upgrade, but I'd like to keep the RDRAM coz I spent quite a bit of money on it. I was thinking of looking for a 423 CPU but they're expensive as all hell and there's the 2GHz ceiling.

Question: are there decent motherboards out there that support RDRAM and > 2.0GHz?

Thanks.

... and sell the Dell itself too as a barebones. Some Dell worshipper might give you more than its true value of $20 and a cuppa coffee 🙂

Then search for the "system buyer" thread to find the right parts to make yourself a nice A64 system that's twice as fast as your P4 but still very reasonably priced (such as an A64 2800+, $141 for the retail CPU at newegg).

Yes, since new RDRAM sells for twice the cost of DDR.

People with older systems who want to just add RAM instead of replacing them either pay insane prices for new, or high prices for used.

Punamo, you might want to post on the Dell forums. There is a powerleap adapter that you can install in your system that turns the 423 into 478 pin. This enables you to upgrade up to 3.0 ghz / 400 mhz fsb. Check www.powerleap.com for more information, I think the adapter is $50 or so. I have an 8100 as well and used the powerleap upgrade a year and a half ago and my performance significantly increased (from 1.3 ghz to 2.4 ghz).
