Considering the purchase of this camera:

linkie

This is for my girlfriend's birthday. She is a 1st time user and wants good zoom and good quality in an easy to use camera.

The cons are ISO 100 and no manual focus.

Pretty much, that means it won't shoot at night very well at all...

Other than that, does anyone own this camera or have an opinion?

I am getting it for $300... it retails for $399.99 at most B&Ms

Thanks!

Woohoo!!! Finally a thread that wants info about Fuji cameras!!! :)

The 3800 is a really nice camera. I am a Fuji addict, and I have the FinePix 4900z. It is sort of the grandfather of the 2800, 3800, and 3900 cameras. The 6X optical zoom is awesome, and picture quality is excellent also.

I have used my 4900 on a tripod to take some really cool night shots. The big difference between the 4900 and the current cameras is that there is a lot more control in the 4900. I can mount a telescopic or wide angle lens on the front, and I can use an external flash with it. It also has manual focus and you can disable all of the auto features. It has some really neat extras too, (for example it can take three pictures right together. One that is exposed at the auto setting in the camera, one that is underexposed by an amount that you determine, and one that is overexposed by the same amount.)

Hopefully your girlfriend will appreciate the features of the camera over the size. The 3800 is smaller than the 4900, but it still won't fit in a pocket because of it's shape. If you think that she might like to keep it in her purse, I'd consider a different camera. (Although you won't get an 210 mm (6X) optical zoom on a camera that is much thinner...) I am buying my wife a Fuji with a 3X zoom for Christmas, just so it is more convenient for her to carry about. Besides, we always will have my camera for when we need the extra zoom.

BTW, where are you getting that camera for $300??? :)

Here is a link to compare Fujis.

I think the 3800 is a nice camera and 6x optical zoom for $300 can't be beat. From my experience with Fuji cameras, you'll be able to take pictures at night, but since the 3800 uses what is essentially a mini-LCD for the viewfinder, you probably wont be able to frame your shot very well.
Also, it does use the new xD format. It's got some advantages over other formats but it is a touch more expensive right now because it's brand new.

Overall a nice camera though, esp. for $300.
