Advice on CPU Purchase - Please

I am looking at buying a new CPU and would like some advice.

Would I be best to buy a Duron 600 and overclock to 800 (maybe 900) or a 700 and overclock to 800 ? Since they are so overclockable I get the impression that it doesn't make much difference.

The other option is a T-Bird 700 (all I can afford in the Country) and overclock this to 800-900.

Thank you

Regards, James

you're probably best off getting a duron 650/700, and pushign the guy to 850/900. You'll get a very cost effective solution doing this.

Unfortunately, the price difference is not that good here.

Duron 600 $139
Duron 700 $215

T-Bird 700 $296
T-Bird 800 $380

And these are trade prices. There is no T-Bird 750 listed at the moment.

Thank you again

James

Can you get a duron 650? If so, what price?

Also, what are you aiming for as far as an overlock? You should be able to get a duron 600 to 850.

Mike

Yes, I can get the Duron 650, its $171.

I am hoping for 900Mhz but aiming for 800Mhz.

I'm pretty sure most Duron 600s will get to at least 800MHz. Some hit the barrier around there, but some can make it up to 1G+. If you'll be satisfied with 800, and cost is a big factor, go with the Duron 600.

wow, those prices are high... where are you from and where are you ordering from?? my duron 600 cost me $49 (US) and i got it at 1ghz, i'm still trying for 1.1 or at least 1050/1045 but it's not happening... if you're seriously gonna spend that kinda money on a duron i'd suggest you make friends with someone on this board who can get you a US shipping and pay them to ship it international to you (if that's the case). That way you can buy a t-bird 800 and shoot for 1.1, i think they're only like 140 here now.

Yeah, those prices are insane. For a couple bucks ill ship you a chip and im sure I can beat those prices!

Yes I agree that these prices are insane. The public have to pay retail so it costing them another 20%.

I am in Australia and these prices are in AU$. It sounds good to get one sent over but now our exchange rate has plumeted from US$1=AU$.79 to AU$.55 the price still comes back up. It is still better but there is freight as well.

Maybe I should come and work over there and get paid the same in US$

Anyone know of any good IT jobs going for somone with a years experience in systems admin and several years in hardware.

Thank you for all the replies also, they are much appreciated.

Kind Regards, James
