ok well i have an evga 7900gto. It ran nice and cool until i put a raid card in my other 16x slot. This cut the airflow to the fan WAY too much.

anyone have some advice on a cooler that will work with minimal clearance?
 
Increase your cases airflow. What is your case fan configuration. You should make sure you have adequate number of Exhaust and Intake fans that are positioned in the right places.
