Advice on burning in a chip.

How much of a difference does burning in a chip make? How long should a burn-in last? Is there such a thing as prematurely overclocking?

As soon as you set the thermal paste/compund is soon enough to OC. Burning in a CPU is a myth. It does nothing other than to set the compound. This takes a few on off cycles under normal use, and less than ten minutes using a CPU torture program to do.
