I will be building 2 nearly identical computers for a family member and myself
They have a stated a requirement of a quad core processor and 8GB of ram, other then that it was try to keep the price as low as possible.

1) One of them will be used mostly for simple office work, browsing, and netflix, the other will be used mostly for gaming and course work.

2) The maximum budget for the first one is ~$500 (less will be always acceptable), the second currently has a budget of ~$850 as it also needs a graphics card and monitor. The OS is separate from the budget.

3) The parts will be bought in the US

4) There is no brand preference, If it works and is reliable that is good enough.

5) For first one of the keyboard, mouse, speakers, and monitor will be reused. For the second one a keyboard, mouse and headset will be reused.

6) I Have done some searching though threads with similar budgets but maybe not enough.

7) They will both most likely be working at defualt speed.

8) The resolution will be whatever works well within the budget for the monitor when tied with the graphics card ($300-$400 budget). I had been playing games on a laptop before at 1440*900 with a 8600m so anything will be an improvement and far better then I'm use to.

9)I plan to buy the stuff within the next week or so if possible.

Any advice will be help and it should be noted that this will be my first complete build rather then just changing parts out as needed.

AMD Athlon II X4 635 + ASUS M4A785TD-V EVO MB Combo $183.98
SAMSUNG Spinpoint 500GB HD $54.99
OCZ 2*2 240-Pin DDR3 1600 SDRAM *2 $169.98 $20 MIR
Samsung DVD burner $19.95
HEC atx mid tower case + HEC XPOWER760 600W PSU combo $66.98
Total: $495.88 -$20 MIR = $475.88

The second will be the same except for an added GPU, which I have been eyeing a GTX460 for, however I have little clue as to what monitor would good while staying in the budget.
I would mention size limitations for the monitor, it has to fit on a dorm room desk, but the budget pretty much takes care of that. :p

HEC PSU's are godawful and I wouldn't get OCZ RAM.

The rebate on the RAM is likely a "one per household" deal. I would get something like these G.Skill kits.

The non-gaming system will be more than OK with a $30 AR 400CX. The gaming system could use something in the 500-550W range like a 550VX. You can then check out a cheaper case solution.

The GTX 460 is a good choice for GPU, and there are plenty of ASUS 1080P monitors in your price range.

Thanks for the advice.
The person also decided that the extra 4GB will be added later.
That of course helps save some money. :p

Ah yeah I saw a lot of os combos, though student discount beats out those combos. :(

If it’s the same price before rebates with lower shipping cost and larger potential rebates, yeah might as well. Same goes with that case and dvd drive combo. Better or more poweful stuff for same or lower price is always good. :)

For the hard drive, I did mention the price difference to them and they said it wouldn't be need. For me, well I tend to delete stuff I dont use and I don't currrently have large collections of stuff.

Thanks everyone for the help. :)
