It all depends on what you want. iPods are very nice, easy to use, have a huge library of music and video content available, and a ton of accessories. There are also aftermarket programs for porting movies to it. However, if you'd prefer not to use iTunes (or Anapod), I would suggest a Creative Zen Vision W (30gb & 60gb available):

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000IHBZHC/musicso0b3086-20

Check out Provantage.com, they usually have better prices.

I'm very happy with my iPod Video (30GB, 5.5G). Anyone who's anti-iPod is just being a counter-culture nerd.

i recently bought an iriver H10. very nice player but falls short of the ipod. I hate how i cant sync to itunes and the track skip button is not touch sensitive.

I got a really good deal so i'm happy with the purchase, but if i were to pay retail, i would buy another ipod.

Anyone who posts in AT I persume is smart enough to find ways to get around that, such as Anapod, Winamp, etc.

Not an iPod

Not a zune.

Zen Vision M, most anti iPOD people consider it to be the Apple Killer. As a bonus it is second to the iPOD in the number of accessories that are avalable for it.

actually if itunes had a subscription service where i could download whatever albums i want for some fixed price (yahoo music lets me do this for $100 a year) i would use an ipod but since i tunes only supports an a la carte model... only emo myspacers pay 99 cents a song and then rave about it.

except i want a single program to manage all my media and portable device (including my recorded tv which wmp11 does perfectly). And itunes is very slow compared to wmp11 when browsing my collections and I much prefer the graphical look to pmc 2.0/wmp11 to itunes/ipod (which the other versions do not do any better graphicall i mean).

You can use Anapod or Winamp to get around the player's internal UI? Huh, news to me. Got a link?

Because , yea, I hate the iPod's UI.... much perfer Zune's/MCE's.

Exactly. Parents surprised with me a video iPod for my birthday last year. Great product...****** interface. I don't see why it's so "easy". Majority of the people I know have no idea how to use the damn thing...and get screwed over by iTunes constantly. If you can manage to get around that program it works...but I'd go with the Creative Zen Vision M without a second thought.

I don't understand why people hate iTunes and proprietary formats so much. The people who have a problem with DRM, etc, should theoretically be the ones pirating music, which plays fine on every player. Even if you buy a song and it doesn't work on another device, just redownload it with p2p.

No maybe ppl are just smart enough to figure out that there are better deals out there than an ipod. We're not anti-Ipod we're just smart consumers who don't fall for the Ipod hype.

If this is what you think, then congradulations your just another tool whose fallen for Apple's marketing techniques.

You should get these while your at it

Certain features matter more to some people than to others. Personally, unless the mp3 player looks like something from 1980 or the thing is literally the size of the brick, I don't really care about its looks or size. The Creative Vision:M has more features and is a much better value than the Ipod and that's why I bought it, but it's also about twice as thick as the Ipod video.

Sweeping generalizations like "counter-culture nerds" or "tool" don't really help. The Ipod is actually a very good mp3 player. Are there better mp3 players out there? Well, it depends on what features you value most. Also, I would seriously recommend trying out a mp3 player before you buy one. Personally, I love the Creative interface, but some people swear by the Ipod's interface. It's a very personally choice.
