Advice on a new card

Another one of these threads 🙄, but here it goes. I'm buying a new card(s) soon; having trouble deciding what to do.

Ideally I want a strong single card, so the 780ti is tempting to me, but the 3gb of ram is really worrysome. The plan is to run one card for a year or two, then when maxwell hits I'll buy a second one at a reduced price.

If there was a 6gb 780ti right now I would probably buy it right away, but no official release dates have come as of yet. Currently I only play at 1080p (120hz), but once 1440p has good enough latency I'll be picking one up. As of now 3gb is more then enough for my uses, but the future worries me.

So... I'm looking for some recommendations. One option I've thought of is buying an EVGA supercharged, then using the step-up program once 6gb models hit. I'm open to suggestions, however G-sync does interest me, as well as physx for Star Citizen (whatever decade that comes out).

Thanks in advance.

Ah another thing. I've heard that reference models do better in SLI compared to aftermarket fans. Should I be looking for reference, or wait?

I have very little self control.... I'm going to just go with the EVGA and hope I can step up to the 6gb in a month or two.

When I read the fine print on the EVGA step-up program, it specifically stated that you cannot do step-ups between the same card. The example they gave was specifically the 460 768mB to 460 1gB.

I don't think that will work.

You CAN however, do 780 to 780 Ti 6 gB.

You will most likely want to buy a Maxwell when they come out (if you read about what changes are coming, it is actually quite exciting in theory). I would buy the 780ti, use it for a year, and then get a 20nm card.

Well dang... I hope 780 ti black doesn't qualify as the same chip.

From what I've read, you have to 'step up' within 3 months of the purchase. I guess I could always spin the card on my own though.
