Advice on a Laptop

I've been asked about laptops in the c. $1000(USD) range, for gaming purposes. Do any of you have suggestions for something of that sort. I know I'll have to make some reasonably serious tradeoffs to get performance at that price point; but I'm curious what sort of mobile hardware is hot at the moment.
Thanks.

A used Dell Inspiron 8600 would be a pretty good gaming system. Many have a 9600 Pro Turbo, 1.6ghz Pentium M, 15.4" widescreen (various resolutions). You can get one in the forsale forums here for anywhere between 900 and 1200. I played through HL2 and Doom 3 on one.

Another excellent possibility is the E-machines 68xx series. Athlon 64 3000 (or better), 9600 Radeon, 60 gb hard drive. Anywhere from 800-1100 used. You may still be able to find them new at Best Buy or other places.

The replacement for M68xx series is the Gateway 72xx series; same design, transreflective screen, I think a faster CPU & more RAM, with a Radeon 9550 64MB. The 9550 is just an underclocked 9600. These run around $1000-$1200 on sale @ Best Buy, instant rebates.
Hope this helps
