Advice on <$100 Speakers

I have a set of aging Cambridge SoundWorks speakers that I want to upgrade. Right now, I have about $100 to spend on a new set of speakers (I don't want 4 piece systems). So right now, my options are as follows:

-Altec Lansing ACS48
-Altec Lansing ADA70
-Cambridge MicroWorks
-other?

Is it worth it for me to upgrade to a <$100 speaker system? (considering what I have right now)

What system should I get?

I would go with either the Boston Acoustics BA-790's or the Altec Lansing ATP3's. Both are pretty good setups, and can be had for $80.

(That's assuming you can't swing the extra $25 for the BA-4800's. I know you said that you didn't want a 4-speaker setup, but you could just put the extra two speakers in storage.)

One thing that is really annoying is that theren't aren't that many speaker comparisons anymore, so I have no idea how one set compares to another 🙁

Can anyone give me an estimate of how the MicroWorks compares to ACS48 and
BA-790?

If you are really on a budget, you can get the Labtec Pulse speakers for around $50.00. 😉 It's really good for the price. 😉

If not, I would recommend you saving an extra $35 and going for the BA4800. 😉 It's well worth it, and like Wingznut PEZ said, just put the other two in storage or something if you don't want the 4 piece system. 😉

The CSW aren't bad speakers at all. I don't know how your planning to do much better at under $100 personally. The Microworks are usually $150 and are on special through a link at Blizzard, but they are still $120. I've heard good things about the Klipsche speakers, but those are $150 for the 2.1's.

I'd forget the Altec Lansing's. I personally think they're junk. Same goes with Labtec. I don't hold much hope in Boston Acoustics either because their home audio stuff is basically junk.

I have heard a couple of good things about Midiland and Monsoon. I remain skeptical, but I'm keeping an open mind until I can hear a set of either of these for myself.

I'd have to say that you're going to have to spend a few bucks more than $100 to find something that will outperform your CSW.

Of course that's my opinion. 😉

my friend just bought a pair of Altec Lansing ATP3's and they are great speakers for the money imo, but if you can, like the others said, save up a little extra $$ and buy yourself a set of BA4800

The ATP3's aren't half bad, however, they really have to be set up properly to shine, and I say that because they sound like junk when they're set up in most stores, however, once you get them home into a smaller room, they sound much better.

I personally bought a set of ACS54's for my girlfriend a few months back, and at the time they were the best sounding set of speakers for the price, and I paid $59 for them at best buy. Online you can find them even cheaper. They sound REALLY good for $60 speakers and even the BA790's IMHO didn't sound as good. Since I'm a big fan of Boston products, my opinion comes very unbiased towards the Altecs.

Another option would be to get the BA4800's, spend a few more dollars, and only use 2 of the 4 satellites. With this setup you'll pay $130 for the 4 but the sound of these computer speakers is excellent. Very warm, very neutral (no over exaggerated bass) and the highs are crystal clear and do well on nearly ANY type of music. A very good set all around, with a subwoofer that has a pretty decent punch for its size.

That's very strange that you say that, many very high-end audio shops carry Boston Acoustics. If all their home audio stuff was basically junk, why do such respected shops who CHOOSE their products, carry BA products? Boston is known as one of the best values on the market for their price point. Many higher priced companies simply can't compete with Boston due to the value factor.

<< The CSW aren't bad speakers at all. >>

Cambridge Sound Works makes some of the most horrible sounding multimedia speakers I've ever heard. The only one I have yet to hear is their highest end package, the FPS-3500's, but at over $200 there's no way they're worth the cost.

<< I've heard good things about the Klipsche speakers, but those are $150 for the 2.1's. >>

Can you really say anything good about a product that YOU personally have not heard? Come on, stop recommending stuff that you don't even know about yourself. That's like a Cadillac salesman trying to sell a Lincoln. While he knows everything about the Cadillac, he also knows Lincoln is his biggest competitor and with the dislike he has for his competitor, there's no way he's going to be able to sell it. Case in point, only recommend what you know.

True enough Altec makes some junk, but guess what? Sony makes some junk too! But look at the rest of their ES product line, such as their SACD (Super Audio CD player), or their progressive scan DVD players. These are top notch products, made from a company which can produce junk, at the right price! Sure Altec has faltered in the past, but they have 2 or 3 sets of multimedia speakers out there right now, which sound really damn good!

Anyhow, to really summarize this, your BEST bet is going to be to spend a little extra cash, grab the BA4800's, and use 2 of the 4 satellites the system comes with. Later on if you EVER have a need for 3D positional gaming, you have the speakers available.

If you really want to stick to a 3 piece set (2 sats 1 sub) then the Altec ATP3's or ACS54's would be your best bet. I've listened to a LOT of speaker systems and can honestly say these are the 2 best I've listened to for under $100. My personal preference is the ACC54's (hey, I bought them for crying out loud, they sound great!) but the ATP3's might sound better to you, so take a listen to both.

Who told you that they were a good value? I personally think they are overpriced for what they are. Hi end? You mean mid fi?

The Canadian speaker manufacturers (PSB, Paradigm, Energy, etc..) and some of the budget British speakers (Epos, Mordaunt Short, Tannoy, etc..) have the Boston Acoustics beat all to hell in the high end industry. I dare you to run the name of Boston Acoustics by any Audiophile worth their salt and they would just shudder.

Now.. If BA makes a decent set of pc speakers, that's another matter. I haven't heard them and you're right, I shouldn't have commented on them. I think they should concentrate on pc speakers because they aren't very competitive in the audio world. They did make some decent stuff once upon a time and they are just trading on their name now. Pretty much the same for Altec.

As for Altec.. Maybe they are making decent stuff now. Their audio stuff has been crap since the late 70's and their pc speakers have always been junk. At least any of them that I've heard. I have a friend with some 5.1 channel setup that he got from Dell for $200. Junk! My CSW PC Works jump all over them IMO for a fraction of the cost.

Klipsche has always made a quality product, if you're into the Klipsche sound. Very dynamic and super efficient. You could power their horns with a transistor radio. I don't think they make a bad product, it's just not to my liking. I prefer a speaker that doesn't "shout" at me or attack me. Once again, I shouldn't have commented on the Klipsche speakers. I've read the specs, heard good reviews and figure that if they are anything like their home audio speakers, they are probably pretty good. Much better than Altec IMO.

Sony? Yeah. They make plenty of junk. The only decent stuff is the ES series and I'm not that impressed with it. The SACD is the exception because Sony developed the technology. As soon as hi end companies start building SACD players and tweak them the way that they know how, it's going to embarrass the Sony players.

Anyway.. Don't take my advice because I haven't heard all these "pc speakers". I basically put them in a different class of audio quality anyway. I figure that they are just pc speakers and they can only be so good.

I agree...2 sets of Labtec's Pulse is a great buy for under 100 bucks....

Office Depot sells these for $50 each...and I think there is a coupon floating around somewhere.

Labtec Pulse 424 all the way. BTW, is there a way to hook up two sets of these speakers? I have an X-Gamer 5.1 with the Pulses and a microphone hooked up. If I did hook up two sets, will it function as 4.2 seamlessly will it be a turbocharged 2.1 setup?

get the ATP3's GREAT speakers...

they are much better than my prevouis ACS54's 5 piece... clear crisp sound!!!

Bryan!
