I signed on to a contract job last week that does not have set hours, or a set duration (as needed) which is a good rate per hour, it will most likely be 20-40 hours a week, we're working it out tomorrow morning. The contract I signed is with a temp agency, working for their client (large firm). The position sounds like a lot of fun, and I was looking forward to starting it.

I had an interview today for a separate 3 month contract, I didn't get a particularly good feel from either the interviewers or the work place. Now, they just called me and said they want me on full time, for the lower part of my salary request and potential to move up. These guys found me and asked me to come in, I didn't apply anywhere after I signed the contract.

Now I don't know what to do, go with my gut and stick with the contract work, or go with my wallet and take a risk on this full time gig, and the risk breaking a contract and being blacklisted / fallout from the temp agency and their client.

everything in the OP is about the contract job or is that 2nd paragraph about the full time job? i don't understand your post.

I'd take the full time non-contract gig, if it's work you want to do.

I took a 6 month contract job and i'm in training now.

I'm also waiting to hear back from a perm job that is much better.

Contract:
call center support
$15 per hour
6 month contract
no benefits

perm:
it systems analyst
$46K per year
perm position
benefits paid by company

so what do you think i;m going to do if it comes to it?

Is the company stable? I'd go for the full-time job. Job hunting in this economy sucks, I know from experience. Talk to the contract job in the first part and see if they are motivated to take you longer. If they like you enough, they may.

That sounds like a good plan, I have to meet with both of them tomorrow, we'll see what happens. I'm more concerned about the ramifications of breaking a contract with a temp agency and the client, there is nothing in the signed contract about penalties though.

I assume that a temp agency will understand if you find a full-time job.

However, it is important to listen to your gut. More investigation is needed.

If you're really nice to the temp agency, that would be a great backup in case the full-time went south.
