I have an outstanding reliable 2000 accord v6 as my primary vehicle. recently my grandpa gave me a 89 jeep that runs descent but has some sort of transmission problem Ill find out exactly what. I have various friends with extensive auto repair knowledge and it would be cool to have an old jeep for offroading out in lucrene valley and big bear but id have to drive that unreliable thing out to the actual destination.

Fix it up. If you want to learn about cars too, it'd be a great project to do yourself. I'd love to have an older 4WD vehicle to drive when the weather's crappy or to offroad in.

Jeep...? I assume you mean Wrangler(YJ). There are other Jeeps that were made during that time. Cherokees, Wagoneers, and Grand Wagoneers.

It is either a 258ci engine or a 2.5L engine. The 258 is carbed and is not exactly a beast, but is sufficient and is reliable. The 2.5L is a dog and is basically useless for everyday driving. :D Usually the 2.5L will die around 100,000-125,000 miles.

The axles will be a dana 30 in the front and a dana 35 in the rear. That rear axle is a very weak spot in the drivetrain. If you want to put bigger tires on it, be light on the skinny pedal.

Is it a stick or auto tranny? Neither is especially strong. I can give you lots of info. Do not let me scare you though, a free YJ can be made very tough :D

I'd get it fixed so that I could drive it around on the weekends. You could be just like MacGyver assuming it is a really ugly brown.

If I were you I wouldn't sink very much money into it unless you have extra cash to throw around. If you could get the problems fixed for a few hundred dollars, I'd hold on to it and keep it as a beater. That is what I plan to do with my Cherokee.

Blow it up.

Seriously though, Jeeps are horrible for reliability. Sell it if you can or trade it as is.

I used to work in the insurance replacement car rental industry and some of my most frequent repeat customers were Jeep owners.
