Posted in GH but not really on topic there. Plus I didn't get any advice. ;)

I learned today that my sister needs some lost data retrieved from her drive. I have no idea how much data or how long ago it was lost (if that makes a difference). All I know is that it must be important because when I mentioned to her husband that it might cost into the hundreds he said that was ok. She wanted me to get her some numbers of some local places (she lives in a relatively small town) that could do it for her, but is that her best option? Is there any software out there that could do this? I don't know if that would be practical either because this is probably a one-time thing.

Does anybody have any experience with this kind of thing...or any advice to offer?

Tell them to stop using the hard drive NOW. The more they use it, the harder it will be to recover what's been lost. OnTrack is the only company I've heard of that does data recovery..
