Advice needed on skt 775 board

I have been using only AMD for so long I am WAY out of touch with the intel world. I am considering building a 775 system for fun, probably only a D 805-820 or maybe a 915, want to play a bit with overclocking but not going to H2O, would like to find something ~$100, conroe support would be a bonus but not really a priority. What chipsets are best, go DDR2 or stay with good ole DDR1? Would really like some help....

975 chipset seems to be the most stable/mature

dunno about a board for those cpu's but there's a great deal on a 965express
board (the newest chipset) newegg's got the abit AB9 on sale for 100 After 30 rebate

seems to be mostly idential to the ab9pro and has the uGuru O/C features

I've heard that these abit's cater well to Micron D9 DDR2

I think a Gigabyte S3 is a good choice. Great overclocking and you can pop in a C2D easily.

Right now, no.

When their RD600 or nF 680i mobos come out, maybe.

As for around $100...let's just say things are a tad different on the Intel side of things.

$100 gets you basically a crap mobo, or a Gigabyte S3...which isn't great, but not bad i suppose.

You need to spend toward $200 to start getting to the good ones.

I do gotta ask though...why mess around with a crappy Pentium D when E6300s are so cheap?

Wow, so many different opinions and options...as for why not a conroe, well this is just for fun, I have 5 systems now and with the exception of my Xeon server they are all AMD. I don't really have a "need" for another one, but I have enough spare parts lying around to build one sans board and processor so I thought "WTF?" Most likely I'll turn around and sell it in a month or 2 anyway....Of course I guess you could say "what's another ~$90 at this point?" and I would have to say....well if I was gonna get a better processor I would have to get a better board, and it would snowball from there as evidenced by my finding a 680i mobo already (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813188009)
