Advice needed on picking some audio parts for a car

My dad hasn't had a surprise in quite some time and so I'm thinking of buying a new headunit and speakers for his car, the current stuff is horrible and might as well not even be there.

I'll be looking for a headunit that can play cd's, mp3's are a plus. I have an Alpine headunit in my car and absolutely love it, something similar might work well. I'd like to keep this to around $300 for the headunit and speakers, I can go up another $50 if needed however let's keep that aside for any miscellaneous items that might be needed in the installation of all this.

I'm browsing around on Crutchfield and found the Alpine CDE-9843 for $130, reviews are good as well so I'm not seeing any reason to not get it. As for the speakers I don't really know what's good in car audio and not, if I could get the speakers for $170 or so that would be ideal.

Any advice is appreciated! 🙂

Edit: This is for a 95 Volvo 850 GLT
