Advice needed on notebook options

Well, it seems my choices are basically this:

mobility radeon 9700 w/ a 5400 RPM HD

OR

mobility radeon 9600 Pro Turbo w/ a 7200 HD

These two are basically the same price. I'll be using this notebook for college, so it'll be a mix of mundane applications and gaming.

Also, I was wondering how much better a 2nd generation Pentium-M (Dothan) is than a 1st generation (Banias)? The price difference is gonna be somewhere around $50-100 (if both are the same clock speed), and I'm not sure if its worth it. Thanks in advance for any advice you can provide.

I always recomend spending as much as you can.. you're most likely not going to be able to upgrade your notebook every year. I would go with the 9700 pro over the HDD only because it's non user upgradeable in almost every notebook around. You can always wait for like a 100gb 7200rpm drive to come out (which they should soon) and then upgrade that. In a perfect world I would go for both the 7200rpm drive and the 9700. As for processors, the newer one is faster but only by a few percent per clock speed. I would go for either of the above upgrades before commiting to that upgrade... but then again if you can eek out the extra cash it's never a bad idea to get some more cache...

Get the 9700 now...

Later, when u have cash, sell the 5400 HD on ebay and get a higher speed one...
