So, my brothers comp (PSU) blew up last night, and took most of the parts with it. He has a full home insurance which pays for new similar setup, BUT...

old comp:

2x AMD MP1800+
MSI K7D-MasterL
1Gb memory (pc2100 ECC)
GF FX5900Ultra 256Mb VIVO
2x 80Gb Maxtor DM9+
DVD+-RW
Case+420W PSU

My brother does a lot of 3D stuff + animation stuff as his work, and really could use 2 procs.
But similar system??? Do you think insurance would be ok w. dual Opterons, as that is currently the "closest" system I can build for him? Any suggestions for a good dual Opteron board?

so what is his deductible, how many claims has he made against homeowners, and does he really like having homeowners?

he may want to research it before making a claim. insurance companies are always happy to dump homeowners or change their policies once the policy is used.
but if he can do it, milk it for all it's worth. all the insurance we pay has to be good for something :)

I don't think it's a good idea bringing in the insurance company for a small thing like this. You'll probably get better answers about this in Off Topic as everyone seems to be an insurance expert ;)

It's relatively small. I see insurance more for major disasters like a tree falling on your house. And as theblackbox said, insurance companies will drop you if you make more than a couple claims over a few years.

But to answer your original question, I'd agree that Opterons are the closet thing you can get now.

Ok, insurance aside... how does this sound:

MSI K8T Master2-FAR (dual)
2x AMD Opteron DP 242
2x 512 reg ECC DDR 400Mhz
Antec Performance II SX1040BII soho/fileserver 480W
Sapphire Radeon X800 Pro 256MB DDR-3, TV-OUT/DVI/VIDEO-IN

have to look around still about HDDs and which DVD+-RW...

Most Insurance companies will no cover computer issues unless you have a rider on your policy. One reason for this is the quick rate of technology advancements. Today's $3,000 machine is worth $1,500 next week. My insurance company requires a rider with each computer specifically listed in detail. I don't bother with insurance when it comes to computers.
