Advice needed : How to help a child grieve for a lost parent?

My friend is looking for something to do for her son. When her husband died they had him cremated and they spread his ashes along the coast. Now she is trying to figure out what to do for her son who she feels needs to "connect" to his father or such.

What would you recommend?

Going to where the ashes were scattered (about 4 hours)
Getting a grave stone or plaque?

make a photo album of pics with the father?

That is exactly what was done when my Father Died. His ashes were scattered in the Gulf of Mexico so we didn't really have a place to go and "Visit" Dad, so my Mom put together a bunch of pics with my dad in them and framed them. It now hangs in her house on the livingroom wall. Like a little memorial.... Makes me feel better knowing all I have to do is goto her house and I can still see my dad.....

Man this thread makes me sad.

Son is 11, there is a 9 year old daughter too. Death was less than 1 year ago. Mother is unforatunately into alcohol but at least she knows to call me to get her kids when she goes to far instead of driving.

I like the photo album idea or similar. She does have a framed "poster" of pictures of her late husband that was an actually gift to the husband on his 50th. Perhaps putting that somewhere prominently would help. Of course it would also deter a few would be suitors with some a strong reminder.
