I'm torn betwen the Pioneer DVD-A06 and the LG Electronics GSA-4040B

Here's the +/- on the two:

Plus's for LGE: LGE can do DVD-RAM, LGE is fatser in CD-Mode and in DVD-Mode, LGE is faster in identfiying and loading up a disk, LGE is quieter.

Plus's for Pioneer: Pioneer is more compatible with CD/DVDs from all over. Pioneer can use a lot more generic disks. Pioneer's cpu utilization is 10x less that of the LGE DVD.

With this is mind, whch should I get? cpu utilization, quietness, compatbaility, and speed are all important to me.

IMHO get what's on sale. :)

If price isn't a concern, you could always buy both locally and return the one you don't want...:D

DVD-Ram doesn't particularly mean squat. It's not a particularly common format. Get the more compatible one...it'll save you some grief, imo.

DVD-RAM is rewritable (10,000 or 100,000 ?) many times over but it's slow and not as reliable as the R or RW from the test I've seen which is why you don't see it much around. RW can be rewritten 1000 times before it starts to wear out.

PS: For really important data use a R disc.
