Looking to take up golf with my GF. Last night we went to a driving and range and seems like my GF has some talent. I guess just a knack for it. Anyways, wanted to get opinions on what are some good complete sets that are out there. Price range, hmmm.... haven't thought too much about it. Maybe $500/set max?

I've only played with a cheap set my whole life and I can out-golf a lot of new players with their expensive sets. So I haven't kept up with the marketing and technology. In other words, take my advice with a grain of salt.

But I'd go for a cheaper set with stiff shafts. You don't need any of these space-age material composites. What you want is a stiffer shaft which will translate into a straighter shot. Maybe in a few years when you've got your swing down to a consistent rhythm, you can pick up a better set and go for distance. When the shaft is more flexible it becomes easier to hook and/or slice the ball.

IMHO, the only club you should splurge on is your putter. Get yourself a good putter that feels right in your hands.

Good luck!

Yea, what he said; girls dig the stiffer shafts and straighter shots :)

As for clubs, I just bought another set last month--Taylor Made Firesoles, which are pretty nice and can be had for under $500.00

[Edit]If she is just starting out, though, I would go for a cheaper set until she works the kinks out of her swing...Maybe a ~$200 set of Wilson Stafts.

I thought that the Taylor Made Firesoles Irons set is $500. which means I still need to pick up a driver and a couple woods right?

You need to go to a golf store and have the clubs customized. They have copies of "Callaway Big Bertha" for around $500. Thats a great starter set. But both of you need to go so you can be measured.

If you are just starting out and not actually playing golf, you may be able to find starter kits that have just 2 clubs (usually a 7 iron and driver). I would not buy a new set if I were you just because you will either damage them, or find you need a different set of clubs. You should check out ebay and see if there are any decent cheap used clubs. $500 is alot for a new set of clubs for a beginner. I wouldn't want to look like a poseur with nice clubs but no game if I were you.

I also wouldn't get a stiff shafted club either. They are for long hitters. The reason being, a flexible shaft will give you a better whipping motion enabling you to hit the ball farther. What you lose is accuracy with a flex shaft.

If you can clock a ball, then get steel, if not get graphite. Your GF should get graphite. Just make sure you get used because you may not even like golf after playing it and those clubs will just sit there gathering dust.

If you're just getting into golf, don't go out and blow $500 on a set of clubs!! Look around for a good used set (do you have Play It Again Sports stores near you?) of "modern" clubs. By modern, I mean cavity-backs, don't start with blades as they are much less forgiving and hard to hit well. I have a set of Lynx Parallax irons I got for $130 used in very good shape. My driver was $30 from the bargain bin at Golfsmith. Spend the balance of the money you alotted on lessons. I can't stress this enough. Take lessons right from the start so you don't learn bad habits you'll waste money trying to correct....just learn it right the first time.

Ask around for a good place for lessons. They're not cheap, but worth it as they will save you from a lot of pain and suffering out on the course.;)

Feel free to PM me with any other questions..I'm always happy to talk about golf.

...I just poked fun of a guy last week for having a nice 1K set of clubs and dribbling one off the 1st tee-box. :) He should have kept his receipt.

For what it's worth, my first set was a trusty arrangement of Northwestern clubs...and used X-Out balls until I broke the 90's...then got some Wilson Pro Staffs until I was in the 80's..then etc, etc...and I still suck.

I was at the driving range when I saw this Korean woman with a full set of Honma woods and full set of Ladies Hawkeye Titanium irons. She would hit her driver 80 yards. Then she would hit her 3 wood 80 yards and her 5 iron 80 yards.

Her whole golf set probably cost $3K but it didn't seem to make a heck of a difference in her distance.

BTW: Honmas are probably the rarest and most expensive golf clubs you can buy.
