I have two dogs from the same litter since they were 8 weeks, both males. They are getting up in the years (12 year), and I some people told me the best way to train a new dog is to have the old one around still. Also, having one die first leaving the other one alone might be too much for the old dog to teach new one. Has anyone else heard this or is it a old wives' tale?

Also, when all the animals are spayed or neutered, does it matter if they are male vs female? Can/should I adopt a female dog, or stick with male?

ALL of what you assume depends on the individual personalities of the dogs involved.

Your oldsters may well not appreciate the boundless attention of a young'un.

And I've seen more than one example of a younger dog learning nothing from an older dog.

There are simply no overarching generalities that you can apply here.

Finally, if your present dogs are neutered, it won't matter what gender the new dog is.

I think the older dogs will enjoy the company of a youngster. make them feel young again.

Yup. At first they might act all bitter and angry, but sooner or later the young one will bring some life out of the old guy.

I've been through this numerous times and the biggest benefit comes from housebreaking. Usually the young dog will learn where and when to pee from the older dogs.

Well, ended up adopting an old dog. Seems my place is becoming some geriatric place for canines. The wife saw this dog and loved her. She is 8 years old, so not much younger than my two now, and doesn't seem to give two sh!ts about them and wants to just hang out with people. Pretty mellow dog.

New dogs pick up on old dogs personalities/traits VERY easily...we foster dogs, and the new dogs end up replicating some of the things our husky does all the time.
