OP, you don't need to upgrade. You yourself seem to understand this very well, based on what you write.
Wait for Maxwell or possibly the R9-390X since it could be out sooner(AMD has a history of nodejumping ahead of Nvidia).

Interested to hear more feedback after you've played some more games. I'm in the exact same position and was just checking out used 670's the other day thinking that moving to SLI would buy me some time.
The only difference is that I have a 2560x1440p monitor.
