Advice for troubleshooting dead GPU

Bought a used ASUS 7970 Direct CU II. Used in a tri-fire setup for a short period with some artifacting and frequent freezes. I had thought my PSU was underpowered for the config, which it is, but that this was why it would have been acting oddly. New parts on the way.

To test if it was the new GPU itself, I pulled all cards and used the ASUS as primary and single GPU, but booting did not display anything on monitor.

I've tried all the basic things - checking cables, reseating the card, verifying slot in mobo (ASUS Sabertooth 990FX R2.0), uninstall and reinstall drivers, but no luck.

When I swapped back to my original config, everything runs perfectly fine.

Unfortunately I don't have another PC available to test the card on.

What else can I do to try? Or is it likely dead?

EDIT: Fans spin up as normal, both in crossfire config and when used as solo card. Just nothing else happens.

Update: some moderate success just troubleshooting basic stuff. I got it booting into windows, updated BIOS, uninstall and reinstall drivers, etc. And the card does work for basic usage. But the instant it gets any load of any kind it artifacts like crazy. No over clock. I tried upping voltage with no oc but same result.

It may be driver related or it is a dead card. When I rei stalled the drivers I did get a warning message in the installer, but all it said was that there was an error - no idea what the error was and it is not listed in the log output either. With these same drivers installed though, my original configuration works as normal. So, the card is dead?

Very reasonable. 45C when the artifacting starts.

Also got an error free install of new drivers but the results did not change.

You've proven your system is good with what you've done.

Something related to this card in your situation.

Based on dead cards i've had in the past, your card sounds dead. In that whenever you load it it artifacts like crazy.

I had two refurbed 9800pro's that would be fine at desktop, but artifact like crazy at 3D load.

I tested the first one much more thoroughly than I did the 2nd one before sending back.

Sounds dead, I wonder if the guy/girl before you ended up sticking it in the oven to get it to last long enough to sell?
