Refurbished Nexus 7 2013 versions are regularly under $150 for the 16GB model, you will probably also be able to get the 32GB for your $170 budget if you're patient.

I don't think there is anything on the market now used or otherwise that will accommodate you for 5 years.

I never thought I'd be OK /w a 7 inch table, but I have to say I love my Nexus 7 2013 and it fits the bill for me for all of those things. I'd go /w a refub version and save a good amount of money. Will it last 5 years? Well technically, I'm sure it will still turn on. Will it run the latest verion of android? Well of course not, nothing gets 5 year software updates in the mobile market.

Nothing will last 5 years and still be good. Just for comparison the iphone 3gs was released 5 years ago. Look how well that stayed up to date and that was a $600 dollar device and not a sub $200 device.

But in your budget the best devices will be the nexus 7 2013 edition used or refurbished. You can get the nexus 7 for $130 to $160 for a refurbished one 16gb though these prices may include a MIR. The new price is $230 sometimes via sales and/or coupons you can get the nexus 7 new for $170 to $200.

Another good device though it won't be as good as the nexus 7 would be the new model of the asus memopad 7 (make sure it has intel in it). This has specs similar to the nexus 7 2012 but with a processor faster than the nexus 7. It has an intel atom z3745 1.33-1.8 ghz quad core, 1 gb of ram, 16gb storage, micro sd, 1280x800 ips screen. This tablet just came out and you can find it new for $130 to $150 with $150 being the msrp. Recently sears had it for $150 with $59 award points for sears (you use the award points on a later purchase like it was a gift certificate)

If you want a bigger tablet, that is not a bad price. But I would not get that tablet if you do not care about size. You can get much better 7 inch tablets in roughly the same price catergory.

That tablet is comparable to last years memo pad 7 it is just a bigger version of last years model. It is comparable to the nexus 7 2012. The nexus 7 2013 is about twice as good as the 2012 model, 80% faster, 125% more pixels, MUCH faster flash memory and flash memory is usually the slowest part of the tablet, 35% more battery life (the highest battery life in an android tablet only some ipads have more battery life), better speakers, lighter, the list of improvements go on and on.

My advice is look at the website slick deals, go to the search area, type in the word tablet, and then on the left hand side choose 5+ thumbs up. The thumbs up / thumbs down scale is a way for people to signify a good deal or a bad deal. If something is 5+ thumbs up it is obvious a good deal, if it says front page it is a GREAT deal.

For example this is a deal on a nexus 7 2013 model that is still going on that I found by the same method I outlined before.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16834231555

$170 now, $120 after rebate.

I have the same tablet brand new but in 32 gbs. I currently own 3 tablets that I still use and I bolded the ones I still use, but I had at one time 7 different tablets (nook color, hp touchpad which I put android on, archos 8, nexus 7 2012, nexus 7 2013, asus t100, dell venue 8 2013 the dell I only keep for sometimes my other tablets are out of battery or I misplaced my nexus for a day or too.)

----

I vastily prefer a 7 or 8 inch tablet over an 10 inch. With tablets weight matters a lot, pocketability matters a lot. You can always just hold the tablet closer if its too small. I don't like my t100 or my old touchpad as much as my nexus for it is just bigger and heavier, and that bigger and heavier is not just worth the extra weight.

Now for hybrid devices that have a keyboard docking the bigger the better, but keep it as light as possible. This is why the surface pro 3 is better than the surface pro 2. They have the same hardware, but the 3 is bigger yet at the same time light due to a redesign cooling system and customized parts.

Newest Memopads 2014 models that came out this month
7 inch
8 inch

Pcper review of new memopad 7" with intel quad core
-----

Newest models if you bought two months ago. Still not bad but the newest one even better
10" Inch with a FHD screen, Intel Dual Core 1.6 ghz atom called clovertrail, faster than mediatek quad core
Note this tablet is comparable to the 10" samsung galaxy tab 3 but it has more memory and a better screen.
7" that came out at the same time with 1.2 ghz atom clovertrail.

-----

First revision which greatly improved the memo pad
10" with mediatek quad core This tablet is comparable to the nexus 7 2012 and a little better than the 10" samsung galaxy tab 2
8" with mediatek quad core
7" with mediatek quad core, which is slower than clovertrail dual core at 1.6 ghz

Anandtech review of this generation memopad in the 7"

-----
Oldest Memopads
7" Inch that uses Single Core Junk and low res screen

-----

Personally I would not get anything with a mediatek quad core it is just too old in my opinion. The chips using clovertrail are not bad (I have a Dell Venue 8 that uses the same cpu in the 10" FHD). The new chips using baytrail are better, even if they have less ram in them.

And yes given equal specs between a 7" vs a 10" and the 7" weighs 300 grams and the 10" weighs 500+ grams I would still get the 7". 200 grams may not seem like much but it is a substantial difference reading and holding. People with a 10" hold the tablet in their laptop. People with a 7" can hold it in their lap, or overhead like a book for extended periods of time.

I'd say go with a Nexus 7 2013, 32GB size if you can. This is over your budget, but for something you want to try to get 5 years out of, I think you'll want to expand the budget a tad.

I'd go with a Nexus tablet, because you can probably enjoy another couple of years of Android updates from Google. Most other tablet brands you'll be lucky to get 1 year of updates. Also Nexus tablets are easy to unlock and install custom ROMs and these tablets tend to have very good developer communities that can keep the tablet running the latest version of Android even after Google has stopped updating it. This is an option with other tablets too, but Nexus tablets are the easiest to work with and may have better quality roms because there is a bigger community supporting them.

7 inch because it's a great size for reading books on, it's like holding an ereader. Fits in one hand very nicely and is light. Also web browsing and movies still look fine on this screen size, though 8 inches would be a tad better for that. 10 inch tablets, just in my opinion are a bit big and bulky. But the size thing is completely subjective. However larger tablets do cost more and your budget is already pretty small, so you'll get the most value out of a 7 inch tablet. And that is important for something you want to keep so long.

And 32GB because while you may think you'll be fine with 16GB now. In a year or two (or less) you will likely be kicking yourself for not spending the extra money for more storage. Though the down side is while I see the 16GB often on sale for $200. I have noticed the 32GB seems to never be discounted and is $270.

The Nexus 7 2012 would not be a good choice. It wasn't put together than well, it has a poor looking display, terrible speakers, and poor wifi. That tablet has too many issues.
