Advice for setting up e-commerce site?? i.e. cgi etc...

I was thinking with a friend about the possibility of setting up an e-commerce site. Does anyone have some suggestions/recommendations on inventory managers and credit card processing? I don't know much about credit cards, but I would appreciate some help on how to set that up...
