Hi everyone,

I've posted here before and got amazing advice for troubleshooting, and now...I'm hoping for some advice on a new motherboard. I'm out of touch somewhat since my latest build was a year ago...!

My current board is an Abit IP35-E Off limits. It's been a great board for me, but in the mornings on cold boots, it just sits there, fans spinning and doing nothing else, and litterly when the computer gets warm temperature wise, it turns on problem free...annoying...also the double post thing..which I did the bios update for, isn't that great, though works. So, time for a new board.

I'd like it to be non-sli. My card is GeForce 8600 GTS (EVGA) .

OCZ memory 6400.

ALSO if a board says crossfire, can I still use a single geforce card in it problem free? I was under the impression it was mostly used for raedon cards vs geforce? I'll look that up, thats a side note!

Thanks a lot,
Kenneth

You can use Nvidia cards in non-Nvidia motherboards just fine, and vice versa. If you used an IP35-E, then it sounds like the P45-DS3L/P43-DS3L (Gigabyte) or P5Q/P5Q Pro/P5QL (ASUS) would have everything you need.

Is that the one you referred to? Looks great to me. I searched p5q on newegg and got a lot of variations. I would like to spend up to 200 dollars, and prefer not to have to flash it before I can install XP. Flashing it after is np, I just don't have a floppy. I want to order this today. :)

Stability, good gaming are my goals. I don't much care about overclocking, though I really enjoy reading about it and imagining I will. :)

Also I have built several computer and most had problems off the bat, so I CAN tackle them all, not afraid, just prefer not, as all I'm sure.

Thanks a lot!

That one looks great too, but wasn't one of the above mentioned.

I would bet that DSF didn't mention the Deluxe because it's probably a little overkill, unless you really need the extra bells and whistles (eSATA, 2nd ethernet port, SPDIF audio out). If you don't need those features, the Pro is a better buy and probably OC's just as well.

When you do go about flashing the BIOS on an ASUS board, make sure you don't do it through the OS - all the forums say that there's a really high chance you'll brick your board that way. Instead, ASUS has a really useful flashing feature called EZflash which can use a USB thumbdrive, so a floppy isn't even necessary.

That definately makes sense. While cool to know I have, (and never need) I don't need those bells and whistles.

Super cool tip, thanks! That solidified my decision, ordering as soon as I click the reply button. :)
