Advice for my new Asus P4PE m/b

Hello people

I have just got my new P4PE m/b, and intend to use either my existing 1.6A Northwood (o/c to 2.3GHz), or the spare 2.0A Northwood - which one would be recommended on the P4PE ?

Second question I have is the memory - at the moment, I've got a Samsung PC2700 512MB DDR, but I intend to buy a newer one, which hopefully will o/c better. I have been looking at info, but I'm a bit lost - any advice about which one (make) to go for (I was thinking of something like PC3200 or 3500) ?

All help appreciated 🙂

Your PC2700 memory is good for a FSB of 166mhz. You are only running it @144mhz so the problem is not the memory. I would invest some money on better cooling and see if I can get a o/c of 2.6ghz.

Hmm...

Ok, thanks for that info.

Currently, I think I have a CoolerMaster one (haven't got the details like model number, etc.) which I noticed performed better than the standard Intel one.

Any suggestions about a good heatsink option ? I have read about a handful, but not really clear about the top/good performers.

Thanks...

Hmm, after doing a bit of reading, I think I've got a few h/s options :

1. Swiftech - MCX4000-B
2. Zalman CNPS6500B-ALCU 'silent' CPU Cooler
3. Thermaltake AX478

I know the Swiftech is very well rated, but is expensive 🙁 I can't find the AX478 here in the U.K. And the Zalman again is expensive.

Any recommendations people ?

I just bought the Thermaltake online last nite. It was $33.xx after tax.. cant remember where I ordered it from though and the email is home on my pc.. sorry....

Should be a big step up from my AVC Sunflower.

Oh ok.

Do let me know the difference in performance that you can see. I intend to make a decision fairly quickly. Thanks...

youre forgettin about alpha pal8942
...its probably up there alongside swiftech though...

volcano 7+ is not too shabby ive found

also, if you venture past 150frq, most of the time the onboard audio craps out
just a thing i thought id let ya know (it did on my friends, and others ive read)

...go wtih 1.6a
2.0s wre not very good ocers

Please elaborate? I am @ 174 FSB right now with onboard audio, usb, lan, and raid all on and working fine. Are you saying that If I disable all of this stuff, I may be able to go higher?

Thanks

i was talking about the p4pe
ppl have found the sound to cut out over 150ish fsb (again, my friends did, and others as well)

it probably wont help you go any higher....its just that if he's using onboard sound, then that might affect his overall oc (might not go above 150ish if his sound cuts out..)

lan and usb works fine, jst the sound for some reason (even with a locked pci)

ok.. I also checked on my pc by removing all but the onboard lan and I can run simple tests just fine but apps like 3dmark 2k1 close on their own.. definitely not stable.

Thanks for the info.

I intend to disable the Onboard sound anyway, and put in my brand new Creative Audigy 2 card 😉

Strange that you mention, but I was actually looking at the Alpha last night and trying to find out some more info about it. I will have a quick check about it as well.

I've read that the Volcano is quite noisy, and noise is one factor I want to try and reduce, considering I'll have 2 PCs running in the next room, with a total of 6 fans (excluding the H/s ones) and I sleep with the bedroom door open !!! Not a pleasant experience...

That's due to a bug in the PCI/AGP lock on the P4PE series and I used to have it but the fix is quite simple, just raise the PCI/AGP a notch or 2 above the default and the lock works again allowing you to use the on-board sound again and overclock better as well.

for more infor and some head to head comparisons between swiftech and Pal do a search at Neoseeker.com. I found that they pulled all the reviews for the heatsinks and were very useful.

I ahve a swiftech 4000 and it's great and looks very nice with the TMD fan. The TMD fan actu7ally lowers your temp ALOT compared to just a regular fan.

oddly enough thats exactly what i did when i was testing lol
locked it around 68ish mhz agp....whatever pci corresponds to that... and it would kinda work again
but its not like he cares much, hes using a pci sound card and i think 1.6>2.59ish is a very nice oc haha 🙂

Hello again people

Right, I've got this setup now :

ASUS P4PE/LAN/Sound (Onboard sound disabled now)
P4 2.0A Northwood
Creative Audigy 2 Soundcard
MSI GeForce Ti4200 128MB Video
Alpha 8942 h/s, running with Y.S.Tech 80mm fan (as my Sunon 80mm has not yet arrived !)
Corsair Platinum Series XMS3500 434MHz CL-2 512MB DDR 'Memory with Muscle' (CMX512-3500C2PT XMS 3502v1.1)

When I booted the system up, and went into BIOS, it had all sorts of options, and I'm lost. I tried to start off with FSB of 140, but the system would not boot up.

I am quite lost about where shall I start with o/c.

Can some one please guide me here ? Thanks...
