i have never really delved deep into cooling etc as i have never overclocked but now i need to just to get it running normal.

i got 1700XP & it was great, so fast, but it was getting very hot in my little mini-ATX, much hotter then my 1.2 t-bird did.

do went & got a full ATX, put a fan in the front blowing air in, a fan at the back, blowing air out & also bought a Tornado CPU fan (WIN-7528)

well when i put it back together it was running so slow, every application was as slow if not slower then my 1.2 ran at.

pulled out the cpu, wiped off the paste, re did that & installed it & it was back to full speed.

Now a few weeks later, its back to slow & also idling at 55+ CPU temp.

i just re did the paste again , but that didnt do the trick like last time.

i am using some old paste a mate had in hes garage for a few years. So needless to say i am after so better quality paste, but if that doesnt work should i invest in a better CPU fan ???

any advice on this would be appreciated

thanx heaps

I like Arctic Silver 3. It is formulated not to dry at the temps an AMD can generate so it stays stable over long periods of time. I have known pastes like Radio Shack (even the better older version, the new formula just shouldn't be used on your AMD period.) to dry over time even under less heat loads than a high end AMD.

There are other decent thermal compounds out there also, but AS3 is decently cheap (around $6) and I know it works well over time.

is your tornado amd approved? if not, try investing in a svc-gc68 from case-mod.com, $13 gets you that, a 30 cfm fan, and arctic alumina (easier to clean, non electrically conductive, and comparable to as2)

i really dont know bout my Tornado. The box says on the side
Tornado
Heavy duty CPU cooler
Application: Socket type CPU
support: 1.2ghz, 1.33ghz, 1.4ghz or higher

its the 24k Gold plated plate thats pure cooper.

i got it for bout AU$35, which i think converts to about US$18

the paste is old, like i said, you guys probably have never heard it, it is: Dow Corning 340.

theres no date on it, but i know it would be atleast 2 years old, probaby closer to 3-4.

this is y i am thinking that its the paste causing my problem.

is it common to have a system run great then over time (say as little as a few weeks like in my case) for it both start running hot & run slower???

i am assuming this is not a coincidence & that the getting hot is in direct relationship with the whole system running slow! (slower then my t-bird 1.2(b) did!)

thanx guys & keep the info roling

PS is idle 55 CPU temp too? how too hot? gets up to 60-64 temp after playing games.
