I currently have a 1.2 GHz T'bird on an Asus A7V133 MB. I want to know if upgrading to an XP 1800+ on a SiS735 MB will improve gaming performance. I'm asking because I may sell my 1.2 and MB to my brother to upgrade his slow machine. I'll do it and pay most of the cost, IF I can see some benefit. My video card is a VisonTek GeForce 3 (original release). I liked the SiS MB option because I have 512 MB of 133MHz CL2 RAM from Curcial that I'm not ready to through away. Thanks for any advice.

unless you got money to burn, i would suggest waiting for next Gen Procceser/Mobo Combo. I have a 1.2 TB and GF2GTS and i can run the latest and greatest just fine at 1024x768, 1600x1200 gets a little iffy though.

You're good to go for awhile. I have a 1.4 T-bird... no thoughts of upgrading until the Hammer is out.

You don`t really need to upgrade yet,you have a decent cpu and very good video card so you won`t see a big improvement,I would wait and save your money for later on down the road.

Btw welcome to Anandtech forums charlieblk.

I went from a T-Bird 1.33 with 133mhz SDRAM to 1800+ with 266mhz DDR and I can say that there was definantly a FAT speed jump. I'm not sure how well the SDRAM will fair with an Athlon XP though. I would just be content with what you have for now, and wait for the good stuff to come out in a few months, a 1.2ghz T-Bird and GF3 is more than enough for now.

bdog (or anyone else)-

I'm now considering going to the Shuttle KT266A board with 2100 DDR ram. It sounds like my upgrade may be similiar to yours. What kind of speed increase did you see in games after you went from the 1.13 with SDRAM to 1800+ with DDR ram? What video card do you have? If anyone else has experience with a similiar upgrade, I'm interested in the speed increase. Thanks

P.S> Sorry about the early self bumps. It won't happen again.

I went from a Duron 800 to a XP1500+ and honestly the only difference I've noticed is that I can now run all my games freely at 1280*1024. Well that and the fact that benchmark results are way higher.

I'd say that if you don't have the money to burn then just hold out. I'd wait for a clawhammer later this yr before upgrading.

I agree too... the only noticeable difference between your 1.2 tbird and XP 1800+ will be in games run at high resolutions. DDR might improve conventional windows performance SOMEWHAT (depends on exactly what you're doing), but the difference isn't going to be that tremendous (i saw no difference when upgrading to ddr from sdr myself).

But your brother sounds like he needs the system. So why not treat yourself and make the both of you happy. But the end result is up to you, really. My advice: hold onto that tbird, its going to be good for at least another year to a year and a half. We'll have like 4 ghz processors the, which will make your XP 1800+ look ancient
