Hey people! There are a lot of inferior products and brands to avoid, but many of us are still unaware of which makers to stay away from. I know all products are not the same, but please post any bad experiences or products of poor quality you can think of.

In recent news:

75GXP 45GIG hdds are failing prematurely
and Abit KT7A boards are unstable:|
i have both. lucky me:(

I'll start, for one my AIWA home shelf system quit on me after 1 1/2 years of use. Their CD motors just don't have the same life as the Sony's.

Uhm, AIWA is owned by Sony. All parts inside are from Sony. :)

But does anyone agree that AIWAs are not a good brand stereo? Two of my friend's have an AIWA also, and their CD players quit on them too:(

Sony doesn't make long lasting equipment, thus that's what you
are seeing. For example, playstations overheating, dying in 1 year, various tvs crapping out over 2 years, etc.

Sorry, my Aiwa NSX-D939 is 6 years old and it still works! Wish my brother would give it back! The newer Aiwa stuff I don't like -- they do seem cheaper knock offs more than anything. The older Aiwa stuff was rock solid, maybe Aiwa make them cheaper now so they don't compete as heavy against Sony's stuff.

I have two 75 GXP 45 giggers. They've run flawlessly for months now.

Here's some good advice:

It's called the law of the three Fs

If it flies, floats or fscks, rent it.

All of them are FAR too expensive to maintain if you buy them :)

I have an AIWA FX-W20 home system and it's been in the family for 16 years.
only problem is the fastforward and rewind doesn't work anymore for the primary tape deck. the secondary one still works fine. even the turntable is still fully functional.

I had an Aiwa car stereo, and though it was working after a year, one of the buttons had become stuck inside the unit. My Aiwn home stereo isn't as lucky...cd motor works some of the time, and craps out the rest. I've seen the same thing happen to the newer silverish units that friend of mine had, so it must just depend on luck of the draw.

i've seen several aiwas malfunction, especially the CD changer mechanism and motor.

in contrast, i've seen aiwa mini system from the early 90's which only play single cd's and they seem to have less problems.

<< As far as I understand, AIWA is Sonys 'highend' division. >>

I don't see how. Are there any AWIA products that are higher end than the Sony ES and XBR lines?

I've opened up both a PSX and a Dreamcast, the DC is put together quite well, the PSX on the otherhand was typical sony disposables.

Oh, and never buy a JTS drive, I have yet to hear of someone that didn't have problems with them.
