I have a fairly decent box that is kind of rotting away (2400 xp, 2 GB ram, gf4600 ti 128 MB, dvd writer, 120 GB hd*, wifi...) and I want to set it up as a media server/pvr. I was toying with the idea of using either Windows Server 2k3 or MCE, versus a friendly Linux distro like Ubuntu (my Linux is pretty rough).
I am going to assume for a few minutes (yeah, I know this isn't a great idea) that I can get all my hardware working under either OS. So, barring hardware issues, what do you think? What software do you recommend under a Windows platform? Under Linux? What Linux distros come to mind that might serve me well? What kind of dis/advantages do you see under either platform?
Any responses would be appreciated. Thanks.
*I might later on, increase the power of the computer and make it a mail server and an externally available FTP dump of sorts. I also plan on upgrading the storage pretty quickly to a RAID 5 with 4x300 GB hds or something...
