Advice For A "New" Video Card

I own a 3400+ with a 6600GT...But thats not the problem.

My situation is that my brother has a Dell 8200 AGP 4X/2GHZ/768MB@400MHZ with a Ti4400 and to be honest, it sucks on today games.

My brother likes games too, so I want to buy a "nice" AGP card so we could play together.

I tried a friends 6600GT on it, and gameplay was "decent", but a newer card will give it a nice boost.

Given the fact of the limited bandwith (AGP 4X)...Will I be able to buy a faster card (like a X800 GTO) without having a bottleneck???

I know that the system is old, but with a new card, it will do the job.

Any info on the best card to suit that RIG will be apreciated.

the 2ghz cpu is somewhat a bottleneck for today's standards. i don't think it's worth buying a $200 or over graphics card for a 2ghz system. the 6600gt agp is more than enough imo.

I'd got the route of a used 9800 pro or used 6600GT. Beware that with the GT, you may need a PSU upgrade, which isn't so cheap on a Dell. May not though.

I'm assuming your video card is PCI-e? If not, then upgrade yours with a GTO and give him the old one.

You won't see much of a performance gain coming from a Ti4400 unless you upgrade to 6800 or higher. But if you do so the CPU will bottleneck the video card. So that's your dilemma. What games does your brother want to play? How about lowering AA and AF a little bit for some FPS gain?

You wrong my man. The 6600GT is a Ferrary compared to the TiGeoMetro. I tested both cards on the 8200.

I am playing medal Of Honor Pacific Assault, Flight Simulator 2004 and Splinter Cell Chaos Theory.

I will sell the 8200 for 300 bucks to my cousin and build a system for my brother.

You convinced me, his PC is Jurassic, and my brother is a good kid...he deserves it.

Now, my problem is that i am OUTDATED on the "bang for the buck" scenario.

I WILL go AMD 64, 1GB, a sub 325$ video card...and a SLI board.

Any good gaming rig below 1200??

A 9 series Radeon would work. I just bought my brother a 9600XT for his P3 setup, but for that a 9800xx would work okay.

Oh, one thing.

My Uncle has a A64 3400+ Compaq Presario.

Can I buy a 3000+ and put it under his hood without him noticing???

why would you want to do that to your uncle?

If his uncle never plays 3D games, has never heard of encoding, only watches p0rn/uses roofinex, etc, he will never notice the difference... just be sure they're both the same socket there... is his presario socket 754 or 939?
