Advice for a linux user and a new card

I'm looking to replace my wheezy 5670.

I have not been very impressed with the AMD drivers on linux. Are the nvidia ones any better?

I want a midrange card (more powerful than a 5670) that is quiet. What are your reccomendations?

Thanks 🙂

If you have been very pleased with your AMD drivers I would encourage you to stick with what works. But that is the linux noob in me speaking, once something is working in linux I just leave it alone..

as far as midrange cards go, you could grab a 5770, maybe a 6870 if you are really looking for some more power.

why do you need a graphics card on a unix-like OS, you can't play games on it or anything

You need to get up to speed on linux, its not like it was 10 years ago, alot of games do work fine on linux now including some newer ones such as most source based games(l4d, CS, TF2)

There is even pay software out now that emulates dirextX and allows the use of most newer games.

to the OP

Nvidia is light years ahead of AMD in linux drivers, its actually the one of the main reasons i switch to Nvidia i couldnt handle the crap drivers AMD was putting out for linux, was to the point where desktop effects were lagging and crashing with a 4890.

If you are looking for stability or just spend alot of time in linux then IMO it is totally worth it to switch over.

I wouldn't say that, having used both, AMD's fglrx drivers work pretty well in everything I have tried.

They have come a long way.
