Advice for a dev server

Since I'm getting into programming and web programming, I am looking into getting a small low-cost server to test my stuff on. The server would also double as a file server, and occasionally a local game server. On it would be a web server, PHP, XML parser, and other stuff I need to develop my stuff with. What's you guys' advice for a server like this?
