Advice for 4000 mile south-eastern-Europe roadtrip

Hi guys,

I know you're mostly Americans here, who probably won't have much topical information regarding the shitholes I'll be driving through, but at least some of you will be more open to the notion of a road trip, than my European brethren.

Here's my planned route: http://************/nhlqo7k
I plan to go clockwise, to save the best bits for last, even though this will mean that I'll go over the Stelvio pass in what I think is the "wrong way".
The initial northward leg is mostly to accommodate whoever will come along with me (I'm a bit worried about having to go solo, should nobody confirm their intent to join me, but I might still do it.)

Stops are planned in:
Munich (sister's place, if available)
Vienna
Budapest
Cluj-Napoca
Sofia (attending a wedding there)
Skopje
Ferry to Bari
Naples
Firenze
Chur/Zürich/elsewhere, depending on whether someone can accommodate me and my navigator.

That's eleven days of driving for 70 hours of total road/water time (9 hour ferry from Bar to Bari - would prefer Dubrovnik-Bari, but there's no service on Tuesday, and I've booked the Hotel in Sofia until the 18th of August - there's no way to make that distance in a single day). The night ferry to Bari is a bit of a boring option, but then I suppose out on the sea there's not much to do anyway, so you might as well sleep.

I'll be passing two locations where Top Gear filmed, the Stelvio being one, and the other being Ceaucescou's folly - a highway through the southern Carpathians.

I'll be traveling in a small hatchback, that has sufficient creature comforts and I hope I'll be able to get the 93 octane (98RON) that she likes, along the trip. No spare wheel on board either, because sporty! Got a spray-and-pray kit and I'll make sure to have the emergency numbers with me.

So, my questions:
Any general, non-obvious pro-tips anyone has regarding road trips?
Has anyone recently been in the region?
Should I be hardcore and do camping instead of taking a hotel/motel approach? (Don't have a tent right now, but that's not really an issue) Sould I head along the eastern Adriatic instead of down the spine of Italy (I'll be avoiding the coasts, because it's tourism season, and I expect those places to be flooded with people)?
Eastern European pro-tips in particular would be worth a lot to me, I've never been further east than Croatia in that part of the world.
I'll probably pay the 40 Euros it takes to have roaming Internet access, which should work in most of these countries, thanks to the EU's eastern expansion.

Oh yeah, and the first non-murderer who ants to join me is invited, since even the two people who appear interested in joining me are still uhmming and aahing. 😀

Edit: apparently tiny URLs are censored. But I won't be pasting 1000 characters of url in here. Those that are interested will know how to access the map.

IMO and solely because I love Turkey but you should divert to Istanbul after Sofia and then from there drive to Skopje. I just couldnt imagine a Southeastern Europe trip that left out Istanbul!!

Where is the Ferry to Bari leaving from? Albania?

If you drive up the Asriatic coast of croatia, you will miss Naples and Firenze so the answer to that question depends on how badly you want to see Italy. beware that driving in Italy, especially driving in the central spine like you mentioned in mountainous terrain and you will be traversing the Appennines the entire lenght of the peninsula.

What's the car?

Suzuki Swift Sport.
It'll pass through its home country on the way - LHD Swift's are being assembled in Hungary.

Istanbul is quite a bit further, frmo Sofia, and would easily add two to three days to trip, which is a bit hard to stomach. I'd rather spend a bit more time at the places I'm already passing through and leave Istanbul for another time.

The ferry to Bari leaves from Bar, which is apparently in Montenegro (at least the ferry company is a Montenegrin one).

I have no real preference either way, regarding Italy vs Croatia, except my previous Croatian experience has been....mixed at best. Most of the trip will be through hilly or mountainous terrain, and whether I'm in the Balkan on the east side of the Adriatic or the Apennines in Italy, not much will change, except the distance to the sea.
I've never been south of Rome, so Naples is certainly something I would look forward to, and part of the reason I ever so slightly favor Italy over Croatia.

"Shitholes"?

With that attitude I'd suggest you stay home.
Exactly...

So what are you going to do with your hard earned vacation time?

I don't know, but I'd really like to visit some shitholes.

I'd kill to do a trip like that so long as I didn't have to drive a Suzuki Swift!

your trip looks great! Glad you chose Napoli! Its so underrated in terms of what is available by train or car in the area. At least they have been taking care of the garbage !

If I didnt have kids and a wife who nags I would go with ya!

Yeah, I should just take the plane, it's cheaper too.

Anyway, south-eastern Europe is a shit hole.
A friend just got home from a deployment to the peace-keeping troops in Albania. Peace there is still being enforced by foreign presence.
Greece is bankrupt, Romania is corrupt, and luckily I don't know enough about Bulgaria to wonder about it.
Southern Italy has been economically stricken since forever and is being carried by the north.

But then I've never been there, and it's always good to get that first hand experience, to see how much better the rich west has it. There's also a lot of landscape that's interesting, on which the shit hole factor has little impact.

Compare it to driving through Mexico. There's a few islands of tourism, there's some industry, but the deeper you get, the more you end up in the shit, no matter how pretty it all looks. You'd still be curious what it's like to go there. And that curiosity is one factor that makes me want to go on this trip.
The other factor is the sheer madness of it. I know that it's a perfectly stupid idea. But that just makes me want to follow through with it all the more.

Apparently Stelvio Pass ain't that great, unless you can have the entire road closed down for you.

Not going there to rag the car, but more for the vista. Might still reroute though, if the map shows me something more interesting.
When driving for 7-8 hours a day, most of it on highways, I doubt there'll be much interest in going crazy. And I'd never drive above the speed limit in Switzerland. They've got fixed radar speed cameras all over the place, and a zero tolerance stance toward speeding.
If I'm going solo, I might just cut it short and go from Milano via Torino under the Mont Blanc and straight home, to avoid Switzerland.

I reiterate. Just stay the fuck home until you learn to appreciate other cultures and how they live.

If you consider your destinations to be "shitholes" you have no business traveling to other countries.

You're the last person anyone wants visiting their homeland.

I've never been south of Rome, so Naples is certainly something I would look forward to, and part of the reason I ever so slightly favor Italy over Croatia.

if you are in/near Naples make sure you see the following items:

Reggia di Capodimonte, a grand palace in Napoli for Bourbon Kings of Two Sicilies.
Reggia di Caserta, known as the Versailles of Italy. One of the biggest palaces in Europe and spectacular gardens/fountains
Monte Cassino: first monastary and source of benedictine order built in 529. Enormous building and grounds. Also war cemetary for battle of monte cassino in ww2.
Mt Vesuvio: no visit to Napoli is complete without a hike up the volcano and look into the crater.
Pompeii: 'nuf said.
Drive along the Amalfi Coast: narrow twisting mountain road that looks out to the Gulf of Sorrento, Mediterranean Sea, Tyrrehnian Sea and Gulf of Naples. Start in Napoli and drive south to Castellmare di Stabia, then to Sorrento, next Positano and finish at Amalfi (or keep going 🙂 ). One of the most beautiful drives and scenic views; popular tourist destination. If you like seafood, stop at any of the restaurants along the water front. The fish is guaranteed to be fresh and caught that day.
island of Capri: Island near Amalfi that can be reached by ferry. Enchanting and beautiful. Make sure to visit Grotta Azzurra/Blue Cave which is a cave system you can paddle your boat into. The sunlight is somehow able to reach into the cave and illuminates the entire thing creating a blue lighting effect.

:hmm:

Man who the hell would ever visit NYC right? 75% of it is absolute shithole with nothing there. Actually, who the hell would ever visit ANY country. Every single one of them has shitty areas.

A little advice, your trip will be smoother if you can hide that implicit chauvinism of the GDP you seem to harbor.

Holidays were always about Imperialism. I just hope I won't get robbed/killed or run over some unexploded ordnance.
