HI

after all the talk here about firefox i thought i'd have a look in, and i like what i see.
it woud be fine for me, but i have a couple of other users on my pc who would struggle. is it possible to have IE and firefox running side by side on the same machine so that any person could decide which navigator they want to use, or if i install fiorefox will than then be the "default" navigator?

EDIT: i also note that the website says it is version 0.9 and the final version 1.0 is out end of aug; okay to install now on XP Pro or is it best to wait for ver 1.0?

Installing Firefox would not affect IE at all. You can set whichever one you want as the default.

tabs are a feature, you can create new tabs by pressing "Ctrl+T" and it will create a new tab. I would suggest you first get accostumed to using tabs while browsing and then install the tabbrowser extensions which can be downloaded from here:
http://texturizer.net/firefox/extensions/#tbe

In that website you will also find a lot of extesions which are like little modules that can expand the features of firefox. The main advantage of firefox is its extensions. The filosophy of firefox devs is that they give you a very slim web browser and then you will choose which extensions you want to use, in order to costumize it to fit your needs best.

Hope this helps,

The middle mouse button also functions as opening clicked links in new tabs.

Also, grab the mouse gestures extension and customize it to your liking. I now only go back to IE for Windows Updates. :D

that was very useful thanks - gives me lots of toys to explore and play with. i loaded that tabbrowser prefs.
however one things that i cant get it to do i: load internal links in the same tab but open a new bookmark in a new tab [if i set internal links = current tab and external links in new tab]....it opens bookmarks in the same tab also this way

actually i better take this to the "software forum" and leave this thread for more general help with setup. thanks for help to date

takes some getting used to looking up at the tabs rather than down at windows though!

I believe you have the wrong extensions. There are 2 extensions that allow you to have more options for tab:
Tabbrowser Preferences --------> DO NOT USE THIS ONE
Tabbrowser Extensions --------> USE THIS ONE.

From your post it seems that you have the wrong one. I would suggest you use the tabbrowser extensions. Here is the homepage for it.

Why? 99% of the functionality is the same, you click an icon and enter a URL into the address bar. The only things that are really different are the advanced things like the extensions, keyboard shortcuts, etc that non-tech users won't use anyway. I would say set it up for them and don't say anything, just let them try and use it for a bit and see what happens. Chances are they'll like it better, I know I can't stand browsing in IE anymore of all the pop-up, float-over, etc ads out there that require extra software to hide.

you're right i am using tabbrowser preferences and the tab-X extenstion as well to add the little "close" X to the top right corner of each tab.

i did switch to tabbrowser extensions but then switched back becuase these 2 seemed more simple and stream-lined whereas tabbrowser extensions seemd more...'involved' and unwieldy. maybe because i didnt get to grips with it fully.

what are the main reasons to use "extensions" vs "preferences"?

yah dont worry, theyll pick it up. i set it as the default for everyone in my family, and on my bosses comp at work, and they use it without any problems. you can even download a theme to make it look just like IE if they prefer that look.
