I am 17 and come from a christian background. My parents decided to go through my cd and vinyl collection today and discard what they think is bad for me. They say that i have no right to listen to what i want to until i leave the house. Also they read the insert book in my radiohead kid a cd and were horrified. I tried to explain to them how it was ironic but they thought it was from hell or something.

do i have the right to be mad? what do you guys think?

i tried to explain to them that doing this would make me reject christianity but they think its best

of COURSE you have a right to be mad!

it's your stuff, not theirs.

however, did you do anything to warrant such an action by your parents? what brought this upon suddenly?

Ouch!

This is a tough situation indeed. Do you have a good relationship with your parents? Can you sit down and talk to them like an adult, or do they insist on still treating you like a child?

Yes you have the right to be mad.

BUT.....

As long as you live in their house, they have the right to final say about your activities.

So, move out, or deal with it. You can continue to try and get them to open their minds, but it's probably futile.

good luck.

That's why you keep "evil" CDs off the CD rack by your stereo and in the closet under a pile of sweaters or somesuch. My parents were exactly the same as yours. Did that stop me from listening to the music I wanted to in high school? Hell no! I had all the Slayer, Obituary, Cannibal Corpse, etc I wanted. If anything their opposition to it made me more determined to listen to it. Just go buy yourself another radiohead CD and be a little more careful where you leave it this time.

I think that as long as you live in your parents house you should respect their wishes. In my case that included listening to my music when my parents are at work, or simply turning it down so that they can't hear it.

Still, they CD's are yours, and your parents don't really have a right in my opinion to take them away from you, unless you did something to bring this upon you.

I think you have a right to be mad, but being disrespectful or throwing a tantrum about it would probably only make it worse. Wait until you've calmed down and then attempt to talk to your parents calmly again and explain to them about the music.

Just like Amish said, it might be futile, but just being mad to them about it wouldn't make things any better. Your parents would probably just blame your behavior on the music then ;)

PS: Don't listen to Napalm, he's a freak :p

danieldex666,

well, judging by your handle it seems like you are not as christian as your parents might wish.

If you don't like their rules then just leave your house. You are 17, I am sure you will be able to take care of yourself.

yes i have a good relationship with them. But they still treat me like a kid though. They won't let me buy certain stuff i want (i work a part time job). i made 4,000 dollars this year and saved 3,000 and they wouldn't let me buy a car stereo :-(

To the guy who likes metal i actually have my "bad" cd's hidden -:) RATm and tool. Im just glad they didn't find those. What i am saying is my cd's aren't really bad at all, maybe if a had marilyn manson they could throw that away.

i think its because i listen to so much music and they think i will quit being a christian which has already started to happen.

It's been said already, but if you live in their house, you're gonna have to go by their rules. It'll be the same when you're older and have kids of your own. Your house~your rules.

You said they still treat you like a kid. If you have a good relationship with them, you could try talking with them. Tell them you respect their parental wisdom (BS to them, whatever you have to), but that you want them to start treating you like an adult. When they take things away from you, their only treating you like a 10 year old. Give me a break!

As strict & "religous" as my parents quit monitoring what I listen to a long time ago. I have RATM, Kid Rock, Rob Zombie, the soundtrack from The Matrix, & a number of other CD's they would disapprove of. But... I keep them in drawers (not to hide them, that's how I organize them... They're in alphabetical order in three drawers...). I don't flaunt the fact that I have music they wouldn't approve of, nor do I flaunt the fact that I watch movies they wouldn't approve. Thankfully they choose not to pry, & I'm free to do pretty much whatever I want.

But, I'm also much more independent than most teens. At 18 I work full time, pay rent, have my own phone line, own my own car, & come and go as I please. I also make almost 40% of our household income.

Your time will come, live by their rules for now. If nothing else, offer to put those CDs away until you move out. It's their house, you have to abide by what they say. You may live in their house, but it's still their home.

Simple solution but drastic.

If you paid for the CD's with money you earned through work or mowing the lawn, not allowance. Then you parents did comment a crime. Even as a minor you do have rights. If the property is yours and they took it away from you, that is theft. If they threw them away it is willful destruction of private property. What I would do is, once you turn 18 move out. Don't discuss it with them and don't give them any options. just get a full time job and tell your parents to suck it long and suck it hard.
Oh, just remind them that they were pot heads back in the '70s they just don't remember :Q
I've got a friend that is 24 and still lives with his strict Morman mother. He's misrible. He doesn't have the same beliefs as she does and he gets yelled at if he comes home after midnight. I have little respect for him now.

Well whether your a christian or not, as long as you live in your house, I think by law you pretty much have to do what they say.

The christian thing to do is certainly obey them. "Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee." Exodus 20:12

And you could always think about the fact that I'm pretty sure your parents are doing what they believe is best for you and they have much more experience than you. (your 17 years compared to their 75+ I imagine)

That's my opinion with the light I have been given.

Youare a MAN!!

No, he's not. He brought home $4,000 last year, & wants to spend 75% of that on a stereo for his car. He's living in his parents' house, presumably not paying rent, & obviously not supporting himself on $4,000 a year.

He is not a man. He is a child in the eyes of his parents, and in the eyes of the law.

AMD, you're missing the point...

He has no rights, nor any claim to any rights. Until he's supporting himself, he is subject to his parents rules.

Fact of life.
