Now that that thread has been locked, may I ask what exactly the rules are about MP3/music downloading, they usually seem to be OK on the forum.

Why are threads like this or this allowed when that last one was locked?

If you didn't buy the CD, you don't legally own the music. Downloading music off of Kasuck, BearSh|t, and WinFU is called "theft"

The locked thread was looking for ways to get around blocked access that was instated by the user's university.

But surely if this is going to be locked why aren't threads asking about which P2P program is best etc. locked as they all involve downloading illegal material.
It just seems to be up to the moderator's discretion in which case there is no way of knowing whether your thread will be locked or not.

It's not your place to question. Got a problem? PM the mods. It IS their discression. They run the place. Don't like it?

Surely Forum Issues is the place to be posting questions like this?

I'm just asking so that I don't contribute to any thread that the moderators consider to be 'bad' and end up banned or something

hmm... what do you consider "bad" then? Is breaking the law okay? Talking about it here is a no-no.

Well, that's what I want to know. It seems discussing your favourite P2P programs or asking which songs to download from Kazaa is OK.

Actually, it's not. What are you, dense? That's one of the reasons that the thread was locked.

Well then explain why the threads I linked above and many others go unnoticed.

Am I a mod? No. If I were, I would be able to talk to my fellow mods and answer it. If I were a mod, they'd be locked.

because there are many different mods, and they don't always do the same things.

Also because there are a few legit reasons for using file-sharing clients (i.e. non-copyrighted material) so discussing them "theoretically" ("Which is the best?" etc.) skates the line and is allowed most of the time. In the locked thread, the poster said that he was downloading music and the (probably valid) assumption was that he was breaking copyright. Also, he was trying to circumvent his university's policies against P2P file-sharing.

I see it as being kind of like the Supreme Court's decision that the VCR was legal. Yes, you can use it for illegal purposes, but as long as it has a reasonable legal purpose, it can't be banned. Of course, the realm of valid legal uses for P2P clients is much smaller than for VCRs, but then the Mods aren't the Supreme Court either.
