Hi,

I see alot of this video card on ebay. It is made by Advantech, don't know much about this company.

Are they any good or should i stay away from this brand?

The prices look good.

I updating my 2 machines: 1 with p3 800 and other with amd 1.2ghz tbird. Sticking with win98se.

I also heard that leadtek, msi, gainward and aopen make decent cards in the mx 440 model range.

Any help appreciated.

As long as you dont plan on playing any new games with these cards, they should be fine. New being anything made in the last 18 months from a major company.

My cousin runs painkiller on an mx420, so I'm going to have to dispute that saying. And yes, it runs acceptably, and that comes from me who has a 5700u. Game makers have to tailor games to run for more than just enthusiasts. Prime example, Unreal 2K4, they had to implement DX7 support because of Intel's dominance in the integrated graphics arena. If they are in the business for a profit, they tailor games to different people's needs.

I don't know what else you're looking for. Never used "Advantech", but the GF4MX is a pretty solid low-end card (comparable to a GeForce FX 5200). It will run older games OK, and newer games at lower resolution and detail settings. Personally I would go with a more 'known' brand like Leadtek/MSI/Gainward, but that's just me.

And while I do appreciate that games need to be playable for non-enthusiasts, you do have to draw the line at some point. I mean, I consider something like a GF2 or GF4MX (retail: $30-50 new, DX7 and limited DX8 support) to be about the lowest card a "gamer" should have these days. If you won't invest *that* much, I don't see why the game companies should be bending over backwards to make things work for you.

If your going to buy on Ebay, I don't see why you won't pick up a used Geforce 4 TI4200. THey are leaps and bounds better than the MX440.
