Advantages to driving stick

Yes, it becomes completely automatic. Easy way to slow down on snow (all the snow you get in Silicon Valley?). I'd advise against the no-clutch shifting for now (if ever); auto clutches are not like motorcycle clutches, where you can shift w/o clutching if necessary. If you're not careful with the auto shifting you can ruin the clutch or the transmission. :(

BTW, if you do use the handbrake on a hill, it would be a good idea to forego this practice as soon as you are confident enough that you will not roll backward while (1) release the brake, (2) partially ease out the clutch, and (3) provide a bit of gas. With time, your car will not roll backward. Practice.

As for traffic, I find if it backs up I try one gear, 2nd or 3rd, and try to maintain a constant speed. Get used to the idiots who will cut in front of you if you leave a space equal to their car length + 3/4". :| You will soon spot other manual drivers as they will be driving the same way you are. ;)
