Advantages of Pentium M over AMD 64?

What are the advantages of a pent m over amd 64, my laptop will be plugged in when at home and when on the road it will almost always be plugged in. I will be usuing the laptop to surf the net, email, minor work at home, games and streaming? which one is faster, better graphics, just overall which one is better? Thank you.

The Pentium M will be better at basic operations like office and internet browsing. It will also have a lower power consumption.
The A64 will offer way more power in games and intensive applications but while consuming alot more power.

PM is designed more for the thin-and-light market, whereas A64 is aimed more at the desktop replacement segment. The PM has really low power requirements (25W for CPU and only 1.8V DDR2), but that doesn't come into play for you, obviously. The bad stuff about the PM is its crappy floating point performance (i.e. games and math-intensive apps) and its slow memory/bus bandwidth (although the 2MB, low-latency cache helps out a lot in this regard). Also, it lacks Execute-Disable technology (buffer overrun exploitation protection) and x64 support, which admittedly isn't a huge deal right now, but it will matter more and more as the year goes on. Personally I'd go with the A64 in your situation, or maybe try and find a Turion laptop (AMD's newest Pentium M competitor).

None! 🙂

I love how amd fanbois play all their cards in the P4 vs A64 debate, then when the tables are turned and Dothan is on the table, they sing the same tune the Intel fanbois do about the P4 over A64.

Right now, my main rig is an A64 3000+ with fanless PSU, fanless GPU and Thermalright XP-120 + 120mm fan 5v 600rpm (my only system fan). Is it enough silent? hehe 😉

Sadly, my second rig with PM 730 has not a fanless PSU 🙁 With fanless PSU, it would be equal quiet because it only has a 120mm fan 600rpm too 😉.

Pitifully, PM isn't a 64bits CPU. I do some Cinema stuff... and Maxon has released right now Cinema 4D x64 (with Cinebench 2003 x64 to bench it). My 3000+ (2.0) was about 23% faster than my PM 730 (1,7) rendering with Cinema 32bits. Now, this A64 has bumped even more. With Cinema x64, rendering is about 30% faster than Cinema 32bits version. So, now my A64 is about 53% faster than my PM.

Frankly, I don't see any tangible advantage from PM over A64. On the contrary.

less power longer battery life is only advantage

AMD out benches in all office apps
you could underclock your amd and still run MS office
Oh that's cool and quiet
If you are plugged in most of the time go with the AMD

What is your point ? I don't even get it. Dothan is OK on games, weak fpu, good power curve, but The Turion is right there....

So again, what are you trying to say ?

lol. i love how amd fans actually think turion is a better laptop product.

And where did I say better ? They are competetive, UNLIKE the P4 and the dual-core offerings from Intel. Learn to READ.

was i talking to you? did i say anything about the p4? freakin paranoid.

Lets see, the post right below mine where I mention "The Turion is right there." and then you comment about amd fanboys and the turion.... Sorry, too logical for me.... mr. " not speaking for intel either"

LOL i remember when turion debuted and all the fans here went nuts. hence, i couldve been talking about anybody. your knee-jerk reaction indicates a decent level of fanboyism. 😉

btw, the turion won't do jack against p-m.
