advantages of home theater cd recorders????

i was looking through various electronics catalogues and i noticed a few cd-recorder/players going for like $300-400. why would anyone buy this? just computer illiterate people? or is the quality actually different? same goes for those blank cd-rs "for music". are they any different than regular tdks, etc? thanks for any insight.
