Hi,

I'm trying to build a new dual cpu system. I'd appreciate if anyone can tell me the pros and cons of each different cpu (MP, Opteron, Xeon).

I know MP is 32bit and both Opteron and Xeon are 64bit processors. Opteron is backward compatible with 32bit apps. Are Xeons backward compatible too?

Are there any other factors I should consider. Any input would really be appreciated.

Also, if you're familiar with this field, I'd also like some recommedations on the motherboards for dual cpu setups.

thanks in advance!

Actually, only the Opterons currently have 64-bit capabilities. There is talk that the new "Nocona" Xeons that will be launched later this year will have 64-"bitness" as well, but the current Xeons are 32-bit only. All 3 series of CPU's run 32-bit apps.

What programs are you likely to be using in your dually?

Here are some benchmarks that showcase some of the different setups you might be looking into:

And you might want to check out the 2cpu forums. It's a forum devoted almost entirely to dually's.
