Advantage of using DVI?

Just got a Sony SDM-X82 lcd monitor and DVI doesn't seem to give a better picture. Is there any way to improve the picture or am I just too

to see the improvement?

DVI's only really useful if you're doing really high resolutions, like 1600x1200+. Don't know of any other benefit...

Also make sure that you set up your resolution to what the recommended is for that LCD or else it won't look as good. The LCD's are tuned, you might say, to a specific resolution.

DVI makes a huge difference on my dell 18" lcd. I'm running a large resolution too but it's very noticeable on text and in games.

The Limit of DVI IS 1600*1200.

From what I understand you can scroll and the text will look nice...or something like that 😉

I've never heard that DVI helps with ghosting... Any opinions on that?

It most definatley does. At least in my opinion. I originally had my LCD hooked up to the analog connection until I got a new video card with DVI and there was a big difference.

Well crap, I ordered an NEC monitor off newegg for $399... Has 16ms response time, but no DVI. 16ms is 16ms, DVI or Analog. THey couldn't say it's 16ms if it's not.

Bump.... I'm right, aren't I? I will tell the FedEx man to take that box BACK to California tomorrow if this thing is gonna be screwy because of no DVI.

It won't be screwy.... and you shouldn't get ghosting with that response time.

I have a Samsung 191T (1900FP) and have a DVI input from one system and the regular analog input from another system, both using Radeon 8500 vidcards. I A-B back and forth all the time and the DVI picture is so much clearer and sharper than the analog picture I'd swear it wasn't the same monitor if I didn't know it. There is way less ghosting during games too. I can easily live with the DVI ghosting but the analog ghosting really bugs me.

Based on my experience with this monitor I would not buy an LCD that didn't have a DVI input, the picture quality is so much better it's jaw-dropping.

And let's assume I've already BOUGHT this monitor... What happens if I tell the fedex man that I don't want to accept the package? They send it back to newegg and... ? Newegg sticks me for a 15% restocking fee, or what? Or will I really not be hurt using the analog input?

Er... Nevermind, the reviews of monitors using this LG panel say that the DVI is actually worse than the analog... Tom's hardware said that the loss of DVI on this monitor was no loss at all, since the DVI on the Hitachi using the same panel was far worse than analog input. So I'm happy again. 🙂 Tom's also reported no ghosting on either panel. Although he did say that the Samsun panels still exhibited ghosting that made them only suitable for office work.

Now that you mention it text does look better. Scrolling up and down the thread is much smoother and readable :camera:. The monitor goes up to 1280 x 1024, so the 1600 x 1200 won't be a problem.
