just what is the advantage of using linux....havent installed it yet and the more i read i am not sure other then experimentation why it would be useful....so whats your opinion as to why it is an advatagious alternative to other OS's
dont misunderstand my question...i think it is great and am excited about trying it jsut would like to understand better why its so welcomed over a dos/win OS

Linux is not something that you can just jump into. Get familiar with it first. It has a totally different file structure and can be frustrating to configure. Also, make sure all of your hardware is supported first. I would recommend looking at the following sites before you decide to install:
Linux Newbie
Mandrake Linux
SuSE
I recommend Mandrake 7.2 to start off, although I am probably going with SuSE 7.2 when it comes out. Try to get the latest distribution of Linux also.

The advantage to Linux is that you can configure it to work any way you want; it's very versitile. It also will get you more familiar with how a computer works. Linux itself it stable, but some of the programs can lock up XWindows. It's wise to do alot of research before you touch the hard drive with Linux.

i used to use it but i find that my printers arent supported in it. and anyways ever since i installed w2k i don't need another operating system.

After using many different OS's I would have to say that for the average Windows user there really is no advantage at all...its harder to learn, harder to use, difficult to configure and update at times, and not well designed for a single user home system. Windows software and games do not run on it, (some do through emulation) and hardware support is sometimes lacking. That being said, it does have the advantage of not sending money or leverage the way of Microsoft, who would really like to see it go away. You might check out BeOS, it is much easier to set up and use than Linux, and there are alot of programs you can download and experiment with.

I find linux fills my needs much better than most other os's. I do not like rebooting to install software. I do not like needing to reboot when I am not in the mood to do so. I like the control I get over networking under linux. I like the flexibility of having my choice of desktops and more than one at a time.

In May I will have been using Linux as my main OS for 2 years. I haven't even booted windows in over a year. I have been forced to use Windows @ work for the last two months, and I can honestly say it doesn't suck. I might even admit it is a better option than Linux on the desktop.

However, give Linux another year or so. I think we'll see a big step up in its desktop capabilities. Also, windows can't touch linux as far as stability, configurability, and overall fun.

well i jsut ordered SuSE 7.1 proffessional edition....i was actually headed to buy mandrake but upon reading here and there about SuSE and then reading the description on the website i ordered it from i think it sounds great....looking forword to learning about it.
i am running winME now and well its so stable its boring....have loaded every beta driver i could find....my gf2 ultra card is using 1050 beta nvidia drivers..i have an intel ultra ata beta release.....had a beta bios for my asus cusl2-c until today when i flashed with the finalized 1006c version that came out yesterday...lol..i am running out of stuff to do.
so bring on da linux

As a neteng I find it VERY helpful. I don't have to learn a programming language to write programs, I can script in shell. What more can I can I say. 🙂
