A bill introduced by U.S. Rep. Gary Peters, D-Mich., to authorize $550 million in advanced technology vehicles r&d funding for fiscal year 2010 will be on the House floor this month.
House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, D-Md., is expected to make the announcement at an event in suburban Detroit today, according to Congressional sources. Hoyer is expected to voice support for the legislation. This would potentially bolster the bill?s acceptance outside traditional automotive regions like Michigan, Ohio and Indiana.
The funding, which would increase to $590 million by 2014, would allow the Department of Energy to create an r&d, commercial application and demonstration program for advanced vehicle technologies.
The bill, the Advanced Vehicle Technology Act of 2009 (H.R. 3246) was introduced on July 17, and was unanimously approved by the House Committee on Science and Technology on July 21.
In addition to Peters and Hoyer, representatives from General Motors Co., Ford Motor Co., the Original Equipment Suppliers Association, ArvinMeritor Inc., Robert Bosch L.L.C. and others are expected to attend today's event in Troy, Mich.
