Advanced Timing on a 90 Supra Turbo

Hey guys,

I got a 90 Supra Turbo and my engine timing has been advance to 17 degrees!

Is that bad? My brother in law said that the fcking timing need to be advanced since the car is old. I think he is full of sht and don't know what the f he's talking about.

Anyway, that's what he set my engine timing to.

I also hear that advancing timing could make you lose horsepower. is that true?

I'm not very clear on the subject. could someone explain to me?

I know that the older Turbo 87-89 factory timing is 10 degrees while the 90-92 is 12.

The higher the timing the more power. Also the higher the timing the higher the octane gas you will need. If the stock timing is indeed 12 degrees and yours is set to 17 it may be possible that you have already done damage to the engine if you haven't been using a higher octane than stock gas.

advancing the timing dosen't guarentee a power increase. engines tend to like it at a certain spot, but like everything its a compimise between timing, air temp, boost, octane rating, and what kind of mood the engine knock gods are in that day.
