I've been in search for a decent Linux tool that will wipe a HDD to the point where even the FBI can't get the data, so more sophisticated then just writing 0's.
In that process I've become interested in the scientific nature of why a simple write does not do the trick, as the head may not write at the EXACT (molecule level here) area that it did before, but the electronics have certain tolerance so don't care and will read properly, but a very advanced microscopic analysys may find multiple +/- charges in the same sector.
Now I've also ready that today's drives are not suseptable to that, why is this? Do they make sure to clear the sector properly?
Also anyone know of any good linux tool that uses goverment approved methods? My searching is not good so far, in fact I'm afraid to say theres better tools for windows then linux, but I'm sure some geek must of wrote a really good one out there.... wanting to do this under linux as its more convenient to stash the drive in my server room and forget about it, rather then my workstation (I tend to turn it off when its hot out).
